The avenue I started to look down when creating my photoshop portraits were focused on a multi-cultural, fast paced lifestyle which I grew up in, this led me to look further into how I wanted to explore that and express myself creatively using photoshop.
The first self portrait is completely inspired from my passion in the music genre Grime, which extends outside of music, into fashion and culture. Grime was born in London and I grew up with it, so I feel heavily involved with it. Grime is known as the new punk due to it being underground with a rebellious nature, I used this concept to create a Sex Pistol’s style collage using a mixture of different textures, facial features, colours and effects within photoshop. ‘Webster’ at the top of the poster showcases an each letter in a different typeface to create an interesting mashup that feels uniquely suited to the Punk/Grime genre and further enforces the mashup style I was trying to achieve.
The second portrait was a result of trying to learn about new styles and I stumbles across a movement known as Afro-Futurism, which is a culmination of African culture and heritage . The reason why I chose 2 complete opposite directions was based on looking at the differences between the black British experience and the African experiences and styles differences produced. I collected some photographs and scans of different textures and materials to incorporate into this collage which allowed the portrait to feel true to myself and to the Afro-Futurism art movement. I also decided to add one of my typographic logos to this portrait which felt appropriate due to the futuristic style of the logo and how both pieces complimented each other.
