There is no doubt that movie and series streaming services have to work across a multitude of platforms and devices such as phones, tablets, the web and even smart TV’s; so when planning the steps to create a successful platform there are certain requirements that have to be taken into consideration. Making sure that the service does not stray too far from the competitors, while at the same time ensuring that it is distinguishable.

The main competitors for ForceFlix have been narrowed down to the main streaming services, which are Netflix, Prime TV and Disney+. A figjam board has been used to look at the UI elements in these streaming services and pick apart the elements that work well and those that work poorly which will lead to the important design choices made for ForceFlix further down the creative design process.

A mood board has also been created as part of the ideation and research phase to help compile different images which will influence the overall style of the brand and app. Looking at elements from the Star Wars movies and shows to gather colours and an overall feel to the brand; then using the eyedropper tool to pick certain colours out of these images to create a palette that felt true to what Star Wars is to further help emphasise the theme within the app. The moodboard also looks a little into other UI design elements, different scrolling pages to flick through catalogues, and also looking into the bento box UI design trend.

The competitor streaming apps have a large demographic based on the sheer amount of variety of content. ForceFlix is all about the Star Wars fans which have a mainly male fanbase and a majority of 30+, with these figures in mind, figjam has been used to create user personas to help shape the companion app.
